She was fire, melting the icy coldness I’d tried to protect myself with for the past twelve years. I should have pulled back, should have resisted. Instead, I melted into her, letting her chase the darkness away. She tasted exactly how I’d remembered, only better.

My hands moved to cradle the back of her skull, angling her head for better access. I might have tried to forget, but my body remembered. Her hair slipped through my fingers, soft and silky and smelling like vanilla and brown sugar. God, I’d missed her.

Eliza scooted closer, her bottom squeaking along the leather seat. A million reasons to stop battered at my brain. She’d regret this. I didn’t deserve it. She needed someone better than me.

Still, I couldn’t rip my lips away from hers. She represented everything good in my life. Since I’d shut her out, I’d known nothing but emptiness. I’d tried to fill it with financial success—building my business to the point where I’d never want for anything for the rest of my life. But I’d never been able to satisfy the hollow ache I carried around with me.

Now I knew why. Holding Eliza in my arms, a kind of peace I hadn’t felt in a dozen years wrapped around me. I never should have let her go.

Her mouth left mine and her warm breath landed on my cheek. “It’s hot in here. You want to walk down to the riverbank?”

I nodded, my forehead touching hers.

We got out of our respective sides and I took the opportunity to adjust myself. I hadn’t been with a woman in almost a year. There never seemed to be enough time, and I’d also given up on trying to find someone who affected me like she did. I wasn’t a man who lost control easily. It was unnerving how quickly she got to me. A few minutes of kissing and I was about ready to give up my entire fortune to possess her again, the same way I did back when it felt like it was the two of us against the world.

Threading my fingers with hers, I tugged her to the secret spot on the riverbank we used to visit. A huge, flat rock jutted out over the shallow rapids—it had been the perfect place for two high school kids to talk about the future. Though we’d always done a lot more kissing than talking.

“We probably shouldn’t be doing this.” Eliza spoke the words I’d been thinking.

My cheeks flushed with shame. It wasn’t fair for me to reappear and expect to pick things up where we’d left them. “Probably not.”

She kicked off her shoes and stepped onto the rock, putting us at eye level. Her arms went up to rest on my shoulders and she dragged her gaze from my feet, up my chest, finally meeting mine. “I’ve thought about you every day for the past twelve years, Grant.”

The walls of my chest squeezed tight. “I’m sorry.”

“I didn’t want to.” She tugged on her bottom lip with her teeth.
